Bridal garter is one of the most important elements of wedding celebrations

Bridal garter is very important and necessary element of each bridal style. A word "garter", which spells on French as "la jarretire" or "la jaretelle" goes from the name of popliteal pit.

During last ten years, a tradition of using such interesting element in bridal style became very popular in Ukrainian weddings (every customer can find different accessories on our official website). Only some people know, where from the tradition came and who started to put on this element of bridal clothes? As we know garters came from French fashion history and became very popular in all over the world. 

First, every garter looked like elastic band or a ribbon, which helped to support holding stockings on  woman hips. During the history, these elements were used by many women for comfortable stockings wearing. In process of using them, women tied them on the hips with elastic band. However, famous favorite of French king Louis XV, called Marquise de Pompadour made a special fashion trend. She started to decorate her simple garters with lace, embroidery and stresses, which made this detail of woman clothes very designing and sexual for many men. Nowadays, woman garter became piquant and hot wedding attribute. 

A tradition of throwing a garter for the unmarried men in the end of wedding celebration is very popular as a tradition of throwing flowery bouquet to unmarried girls. Some people think that this wedding tradition seems not the best idea for wedding. However, people don’t refuse from it, because this tradition can became very interesting and bright event of each wedding celebration. 

How to organize this tradition holding to make it bright and interesting for all guests of the celebration?

Every bride has two garters. First called “honey” and every new husband takes it off from bride during the first wedding night. The second one called “happy” and groom takes it off on the wedding celebration. This tradition has come to us from countries of the North America, so we can analyze how it made in USA. In USA a bride sits on a chair and all guests environ her. A groom tries slowly to hold a skirt and to take off a bridal garter. We advise every groom, to ask a bride an installation of a garter if he will not be able to find it under a skirt by himself. It will help every groom not to make a tradition very long and uninteresting for all guests. It will take away all discomforts. 

To make these actions for groom comfortable, a bride can stand up and put her leg on a chair. This process is very special and spectator, but remember that it can shock some guests of old age, who will present on your wedding. Please, uplift elegantly your skirt and open your knee for a groom, but not uplift your skirt extremely high. Sometimes this tradition can be completely unsuitable for the celebration and you should notice all stuff which is needed for holding for this part of your wedding event. Those men, who will catch a bridal garter, will find his love of the life and build strong relations in the future. 

If bride puts on two garters, a groom has to take off the first one to him only. If a bride is very shy, she can take off a garter by herself and give it to a groom. In some countries, grooms take off bridal garters by teeth. 

According to the American tradition, a girl who has already caught a bouquet and a man, who caught a garter, have to dance with each other. This dance should be done in the end of wedding banquet, when wedding cake is divided. As a rule, musicians play special songs for this part of the wedding celebration. Sometimes groom throws a bridal garter after a bouquet throwing, but according to the tradition a groom has to throw a bridal garter first. 

A bridal garter is an excellent present for a bride on bridal shower from her bridesmaids. Please notice that this accessory bride should put on above the knee on the right leg. In the North America countries, each bride wears two garters. The first one called “happy” and a groom throws it to men. The second one called “honey” or “sweaty” and a couple saves it for the memories. As a rule brides put on the second garter 10 – 15 cm higher than the first one.
